Salt Supply for De-Icing and Water Softening: A Buyer Guide

Salt Supply for De-Icing and Water Softening: A Buyer Guide

Salt supply for a commercial site means two separate decisions before a Norfolk winter sets in: what type of de-icing salt to grit with, and what grade of salt your water softener needs. The two jobs are not interchangeable, and buying the wrong product wastes money and can leave you short when a hard frost hits. Here is how to choose, store and order the right salt for a commercial site.

Key facts

  • De-icing salt and water softener salt are different products for different jobs – do not substitute one for the other.
  • De-icing salt (rock salt and white marine salt) is used to prevent and clear ice on car parks, yards, loading bays and access routes.
  • Water softener salt (typically tablet or granular) regenerates the resin in a softener to protect boilers, dishwashers and pipework from limescale.
  • Salt works best spread before ice forms – pre-treating is more effective and uses less product than clearing ice after it has set.
  • Store salt dry and off the ground; damp salt cakes and is hard to spread.
  • We supply salt to trade buyers across Wymondham, Norwich, Attleborough, Dereham and Thetford on a quotation basis, with free delivery over £50 across East Anglia.

De-icing salt: knowing the two main types

For gritting outdoor surfaces, buyers generally choose between two forms of salt:

  • Brown rock salt – mined salt that still contains natural grit and insoluble material. The grit gives extra traction underfoot and the brown colour makes treated areas easy to see. It is the usual choice for car parks, roads, yards and large open areas where a little residue is not a problem.
  • White marine (sea) salt – a cleaner, higher-purity salt with little or no insoluble residue. It is preferred where mess and tread-in matter, such as pedestrian entrances, shop fronts, paving and areas close to doorways.

Both work by lowering the freezing point of water so ice melts and refreezing is delayed. How low a temperature any given salt remains effective at depends on the product – we will confirm the figure for the grade you are buying from the manufacturer’s data rather than guess. For context, a widely quoted point is that grit salt becomes far less effective in very severe, prolonged cold; if your site regularly sees extreme lows, tell us and we will advise on the right specification.

Spread before the ice, not after

The single biggest efficiency gain with de-icing salt is timing. Pre-treating a surface before frost or snow arrives stops ice bonding to the surface, which means you use less salt and clear-up is far easier. Clearing ice that has already set is slower and takes more material. Keep an eye on forecasts and treat high-risk areas – ramps, steps, loading bays and main pedestrian routes – first.

A few practical pointers for trade sites:

  • Spread evenly – a thin, consistent covering works better than heavy patches.
  • Prioritise slopes, shaded areas and anywhere water pools and refreezes.
  • Keep a labelled, dry stock in a grit bin or store so you are not caught out by a sudden cold snap.

Water softener salt: a separate job entirely

Water softener salt does not go on the ground. It regenerates the ion-exchange resin inside a water softener, which strips the calcium and magnesium that cause limescale. For hard-water sites in Norfolk and the rest of East Anglia, that protects boilers, dishwashers, coffee machines, vehicle wash equipment and pipework, and keeps detergents working efficiently.

It is normally supplied as high-purity salt tablets or granules. Always follow your softener manufacturer’s guidance on which grade their unit needs and how to top it up – using the wrong form can clog or damage the unit. De-icing rock salt must never go into a softener; its grit and impurities will wreck it.

Storage and handling

Salt is hygroscopic, so damp is the enemy. Store it:

  • Under cover and off the floor, on a pallet or in sealed bags or bins.
  • Away from anything corrosion-sensitive, as salt is corrosive to metals.
  • Clearly labelled so de-icing and softener stocks are not mixed up.

Salt handling is generally low-hazard, but spreading creates dust and the bags are heavy, so follow sensible manual-handling practice. If you want the paperwork covered, we provide free COSHH assessments for many of the products we supply – see our free COSHH assessment service – and we can advise on safe handling as part of that.

Buying smart: order early and in the right quantity

De-icing salt demand spikes the moment the first hard frost is forecast, and that is exactly when supply gets tight. Ordering your winter stock early means you are covered before the rush. We supply salt on a quotation basis rather than through an online shop, which lets us match the type and quantity to your actual site – and samples are available on request if you want to trial a grade first.

You can see the full range on our de-icing and water softener salt page, and if you need other winter and site-maintenance items at the same time, our general maintenance supplies can go on the same delivery.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use de-icing rock salt in my water softener?

No. De-icing salt contains grit and insoluble impurities that will clog and damage a softener. Use only the salt grade your softener manufacturer specifies – usually high-purity tablets or granules.

What is the difference between brown and white de-icing salt?

Brown rock salt contains natural grit for extra traction and shows clearly where you have treated, making it ideal for car parks and yards. White marine salt is cleaner with little residue, so it is better near entrances and paving where tread-in matters.

When should I spread de-icing salt?

Before ice forms wherever possible. Pre-treating stops ice bonding to the surface, uses less salt and makes any follow-up clearing much easier than tackling ice after it has set.

How much salt should I order for the winter?

It depends on the size of the areas you treat and your local conditions. Tell us your site and we will advise on sensible quantities – and because salt keeps well when stored dry, ordering ahead of the cold is the safer bet.
